You know it's time to clean the roof when

...ptarmigan start sleeping up there. That's right.

Willow Ptarmigan on the ground where they should be. March 6, 2014.

The other day H had to climb on the roof to deal with the snow around a vent. There he found a dozen tell-tale holes where ptarmigan had nestled in for a nap. There was plenty of ptarmigan poo to the side as well. We've noticed tracks up there this winter and in winters past, but I hadn't given them any thought. A willow hangs over the roof there, so it makes perfect sense to burrow down there. No worries about fox, coyotes or dogs. From now on during bird counts I'll be sure to check rooftops for tracks and suspicious lumps. You never know.

Yes, and when you get to my age you'll be checking the rooftop even more often.

Ptarmigan are almost ptreposterous. And how pterfect to have them everywhere, even on your roof! I'm loving this series.
