An Ear to the Ground

Regina Launch of Brenda Schmidt’s Flight Calls: An Apprentice on the Art of Listening (Kalamalka Press 2012)

When: Monday Sept. 24 at 7:30 pm

Where: SWG Office Board Room--#100-1150 8th Ave. Regina, SK

Join the SWG for an evening of conversation with Brenda Schmidt and Gerald Hill. In the introduction to Flight Calls: An Apprentice on the Art of Listening, Schmidt recounts her first meeting with mentor Gerald Hill during the SWG Mentorship Program, and how that mentorship led eventually to the overall concept of this book of contemplative essays. Gerald Hill will be on hand to help prompt and provoke the conversation making this mentor/apprentice reunion one of the “must-listen” events of the fall!
Books, cake, and refreshments will be available at the launch as meditative embers providing the audience with a number of ways to sink their teeth into something satisfying!



Bios

Brenda Schmidt is a writer, visual artist and naturalist based in Creighton, a mining town in northern Saskatchewan. She was the 2011 Mackie Lake House writer-in-residence (BC), a featured writer at the 2011 Talking Fresh conference at Luther College at the University of Regina and a faculty member at the Fernie Writers Conference in 2007 and 08 (BC). Brenda was finalist for the Saskatchewan Book Award for Poetry in 2001, winner of the Alfred G. Bailey Prize for Poetry in 2003 and a finalist for the CBC Literary Award for poetry on four occasions. Grid, her fourth book of poetry, was published by Hagios Press this spring. Flight Calls: An Apprentice on the Art of Listening, a book of essays and letter fragments, was published by Kalamalka Press as part of the Mackie Lecture and Reading Series.
Winner of the 2009 Saskatchewan Book Award for Poetry for his fifth collection, 14 Tractors (NeWest Press) and 2nd Prize for Poetry in the 2010 CBC Literary Competition, Gerald Hill winters in Regina, where he teaches English and Creative Writing at Luther College at the University of Regina.

A conversation and cake! Not a reading. An eating! Gerry will prompt and provoke, so there will be lots to chew on!
