The Stuff of Thought is a REALLY interesting book. The introduction contains a great explanation of the importance of semantics. Pinker discusses the World Trade Centre insurance debate about whether or not the terrorist attacks were one or two events--in this case the definition of the word "event" is worth over $1 billion.
