Conversations in the Book Trade

...recently had a conversation with me. The interview was posted today. Many thanks to Finn Harvor, who has interviewed authors from a number of countries. I'm delighted to be part of the conversation.

I've since received and read one of the books mentioned in the interview. I also mention Under Heaven, the latest novel by Guy Gavriel Kay. I'm a long-time fan of Kay. Needless to say, I was thrilled to learn last week that I'd won an advance copy of Under Heaven. It should arrive soon.

Interesting interview.

In regards to the iPad: I think when you think of the possibilities that the iPad and similar tablet devices will offer will be huge. On the same "page" as a poem, you could have a video of the poet reading that poem. Or audio. Or pictures. Or other design elements.

In short, you could create or collaborate a whole host of options that paper cannot offer. You could have exploration and discussion. Or you could have a poem alone on a page as its always been. Each piece could have a life of its own as it requires.

I look forward to a time of more interactivity in art. I'm not good at producing anything alone. Maybe that's why I make such a lousy poet. Maybe that's just my generation. Or both.

In any case, there's whole new worlds of possibilities that will open up. Maybe a time when poets could actually be rockstars, part of a band.

I love your idea of being part of a band. More interaction would be great. You came with a whole bunch of things I hadn't thought of.

I look forward to actually trying a tablet device.

Nice interview!

More interactivity for artists/writers would be lovely, but I worry about who gets paid for what, why and how, and perhaps even where.

Thanks! It was an interesting set of questions to think about.

Ah yes, the whole matter of getting paid. That's been on my mind of late as well as my roof is in need of shingles.
