Hats off

...to The Winnipeg Free Press for their new books section! Wow. It's a gorgeous pull-out tab. The layout is fantastic. Ariel Gordon's review of Mary Lawson's new novel is featured. You should see it. Really. It's in today's paper.

There's nothing worse than losing a comment you're sure you've posted; now I wonder if I'm dreaming or if what I'm saying hasn't alreadly hit the cosmos, but I really thought the review was great Ariel, and the web page is fantastic.

Thanks you two...though I saw the section Sunday morning on my way out of town, I wasn't brave enough to read it through until the next day. The bravery was necessary because the books editor was a little antsy about getting the new section together and...well, let's just say I was a sorta kinda nervous.

Hm. Dunno where it went. I never saw it here.

I meant the Books section in the actual newspaper. Sunday's Winnipeg Free Press actually makes it to Flin Flon on Sunday. We don't get Saturday's Saskatoon StarPhoenix or the Globe and Mail until Monday.

Hey Ariel! I was just posting a comment when yours appeared.

Well the antsy thing paid off. I was so impressed with the Books section that I emailed him. I may have used too many exclamation marks, but hey. :)

And I look forward to reading that Lawson book.

Hey, yeah. I just checked out the WFP on the web. The new section is terrific. How nice, when we hear so many reports of book pages (in the US especially) shutting down.

Leona, you're right, there's no shortage of stories coming at us about the shrinking space for reviews. Maybe I'm a tad biased, but with the new Books section I think the WFP has greater heft. It elevates the paper. I imagine that's the point.
