Procrastination

...gets the better of me sometimes. It's at its worst just before I enter into a long spell of writing or painting. I suppose it's just part of the process, something I should be used to after all these years. During this phase, part of me struggles to harness the restlessness and put it to good use while the more reasonable part of me sits back as if on a hammock on a windy day. Several years back I was given a cartoon from the paper by someone who knows my process all too well. I have it posted in front of me, the newsprint yellowed. The cartoon reminds me that I'm not alone in this, but it does nothing to ease the relentless on-tiptoes-just-about-to-dive-in excitement.

I have a constant knack for procrastination. I do this "when I get there or have this or etc" I will write a whole bunch. Which really gets me no where. Before I got to colony I thought I would write a bunch, but I just found different ways to distract myself there. But now, I think this is the time to start writing!!!... as soon as my apartment is set up it will be perfect...

Ha! Ya, then people like me distract themselves by watching people like you distract yourself.
A merry-procrastination-go-round. Heck, once I even went as far as following a poet along on a bark picking expedition in the dead of winter. Now that's procrastination.

By the way, today I dived right in. I pulled another poem out of the hat. The hat then became a poem. And revisions revisions revisions. It was wonderful.

Procrastination - ah, I know it well. We're good friends.

But nice to hear you've dived - probably the fanciest dive that ever was dove, if I know you. *g*

Ha! Indeed, it was fancy. Pre-dive, I suspect I was a spitting image of the one in the hat.

Ok. The bark picking was more exciting the counting the birds. Now that's procrastination. Counting birds. How do you know you've which ones you've counted? What happens if you count the same ones over and over? Isn't that really the ultimate in procrastination?

Hm. Bird count stats doubling as a record of procrastination. I hadn't thought of it like that.
