After spending the bulk

...of yesterday on the more practical matters related to writing, I cuddled up with a novel. It's so easy to slip into the worlds created by Guy Gavriel Kay. He's one of my favourite authors. I had a hard time putting the book down. I can't remember the last time I stayed up that late.

Oh, I haven't read that one yet. I love GGK, though. I think my favourite is The Lions of Al-Rassan, although I love them all.

Are you familiar with Jaspar Fforde?

Ah, I'm not surprised that you love GGK. Not surprised at all. I was up well into the night again with the novel. GGK's next book will appear in early 2007. It will be tough to wait for the paperback...

I don't know Jaspar Fforde. Where should I start?

Ooh, Fforde is fun (and you must pronounce both f's. It's just the way of it. Jasper F-forde.) Start with "The Eyre Affair" - it helps if you've read Jane Eyre, but it's not absolutely necessary. It's just a treat for people who love literature and word play and it's exactly the kind of book I would love to write.

I've read three or four Ffordes - but found that the joke got a bit thin by the third book.

Though it's not as booky, I'd recommend Terry Pratchett's Discworld stuff instead...

Ok. The Eyre Affair it will be.

So where should I begin with Terry Pratchett's Discworld stuff? I see there's a lot of it. And what do you mean not as booky?

The Fforde books are set IN books, whereas the Prachett books are set on a place called Discworld...

It's pretty straight ahead fantasy in some ways but I find his ideas and his satire bitingly - chompingly? - good.

Start at the begining.

Start at the beginning. Ha. Why didn't I see that coming...
