I wonder about the quotes in the story, especially the bit about the shorter guy quaffing his hair up to look grander and the comparison to platform shoes. I would think that if they were sacrificed to the fertility gods then they were likely prepared for sacrifice and maybe the gel would've been applied to their hair and maybe their nails were manicured, etc, as part of a ritual in effort to please the gods. But hey.
There was a story about those fellas on the back page of the the Globe and Mail a week or two ago. The stuff about the Oldcroghan man's hands fascinated me.
Thanks, John. I did a search for that Globe article but came up empty. And thanks for reminding me about Heaney's poems. It was a good excuse to pull out his Selected Poems, 1966-1987. I also found some of his bog people poems on this nifty Peatlands site.

Maybe they were killed for the gel? Maybe hair gel was like gold? Or better? Maybe we should use it for trade, instead of dollars. Ha.
Ha! Funny.

Heaney has some pretty fine bog people poems.
