A resignation towards reality

...is perhaps the most intriguing thing Philip Roth revealed in this interview, but his comments on the idea of a "100-year moratorium on insufferable literary talk" were pretty entertaining.

I found the most interesting part to be towards the end, where he says, It's a horrible existence being a writer filled with deprivation. I don't know that I've ever felt that, but I have felt the being on the outside. That's why I have writer friends, because then that feeling goes away; I know I'm not alone on the outside.

Yes, some of his comments were right on the mark; for example, "I have no idea that I can do it again. How can I know? How do I know that I won't run out of ideas tomorrow?" I think that all the time. But I certainly hope I'm a lot happier than he is. Actually, I know I am!
